WHAT TO WEAR NOW

What are the trends that will make your summer wardrobe? Those quick, easy additions that will update your look without really trying. We asked Sinead Cutts, THE OUTNET’s Style Director, for her triumvirate of top trends to put a fresh spin on your style. Presenting the big and beautiful blazer, chunky flats and the white shirt with a twist. Here’s how to get the most out of all three.

THE BLAZE OF GLORY

Bright, bold and unrestricted, the new oversized blazer is just how we’d like to live life. A fresh twist on the go-with-everything staple, it will make your look a cut above in a heartbeat. This season, a host of designers – Jil Sander, Chloé and Marni to name a few – riffed on the proportions to create the new look-at-me jacket. Working seamlessly in both vibrant color or timeless neutrals, wear yours with one button fastened and teamed with the season’s mini skirt, city shorts, slip dress or, if you dare, on its own. The men’s section is also great for gender neutral cuts. For a look that carries you through, it pays to keep it simple.

IF THE CHUNKY SHOE FITS…

Wear it! We like to think of this sensible sandal as the Barrack Obama of the shoe world; it can’t put a foot wrong. As effortlessly chic in minimalist leather as it is with embellished ties, the humble flats bring a laid-back cool to whatever they’re paired with. Yes, they’re on the sturdier side, but don’t be deterred by the unwieldly proportions or orthopedic overtones, they’re as on-trend as they are wearable. Try bold buckles if you want a more on-duty polish, and look to designers Ancient Greek Sandals, Khaite and Philip Lim for inspiration. We’re obsessed with the colorful flats from Arizona Love. Practical they may be, but they’re also an easy shorthand for style.

THE ULTIMATE HERO

Light, roomy and carefree – nothing says summer as beautifully as a crisp white shirt. The ultimate meeting point between lounge and workwear, the flowing, oversized button-down is one investment you’ll never look back on with regret. On the spring runways, fashion embraced the big and breezy. Stella McCartney, Valentino and The Row all support the notion that when it comes to shirts, the bigger the better. Look out for the white/dress shirt hybrid – the standout was by Rejina Pyo – layered over trousers or belted, and try buttoning above the waist for a little midriff-baring. There’s no (ahem) shirting the issue…
