Which element of your job do you enjoy the most: Doctor, podcast presenter, media mogul?!
I can’t choose, I love my job because I get to do all of the above but I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my love for medicine.
How do you achieve the elusive balance between body-mind-spirit?
It’s very difficult to achieve absolute balance, but I do believe that we often strive for physical health; to the detriment of our mental or emotional health. Listen, you don’t have to do it all, and if you’re stressing about doing it all in the name of #balance, it’s not worth sacrificing your mental health.
You advocate a balanced diet, but are there any foods that should be off limits?
Actually, I’m going to go as far as saying that there is no such thing as healthy and unhealthy foods. For example, many people would say an apple is healthier than cake, and nutritionally yes it may be, but in the context of a balanced diet, a piece of cake is perfectly acceptable and healthy.
What is your workout style?
Quick and sweaty - either at home or at CrossFit.
Are there medical benefits to a glass of red wine and square of dark chocolate a day?! (please say yes)
While there is no doubt that heavy drinking is harmful, it is not likely that very small amounts of alcohol consumption are harmful for all individuals. So, I’m still hedging my bets that a little bit of wine isn’t going to do me any harm.
Chocolate has also had some interesting research to back up its health benefits. A type of phytonutrient in chocolate, flavonols, have been shown to improve brain function and reduce the risk of dementia and various other diseases. For the highest amount of polyphenols, choose dark chocolate over milk or white chocolate.Â
Should we all be taking probiotics for our gut health?
There’s no evidence to say probiotic supplements are beneficial in healthy people. I would advise saving your money and instead loading up on probiotic rich foods such as kefir, kombucha, kimchi, and yoghurts which contain active, live cultures.Â
How much water do you advise we should drink each day?
I think the media over emphasize the need to drink gallons of water; listen to your thirst signals and don’t worry about counting the milliliters consumed.
